Offer Sheet Madness

The St. Louis Blues recently signed defenseman Philip Broberg and forward Dylan Holloway to two-year contracts after the Edmonton Oilers declined to match the offer sheets for these restricted free agents. Here are some details:

Philip Broberg

- Age: 23

- Broberg was one of the Oilers' standout players during their run to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final. He performed well after entering the lineup during the Western Conference final.

- Broberg signed for a total of $9.16 million with the Blues.

- The Oilers will receive draft picks from the Blues in exchange for not matching the offer sheet.

Dylan Holloway:

- Age: 22

- Holloway scored five goals during the playoffs.

- Holloway's contract with the Blues is worth $4.58 million over two years.

- Similar to Broberg, the Oilers will receive draft picks from the Blues.

The Oilers' decision not to retain these young players comes after they traded veteran defenseman Cody Ceci to the San Jose Sharks earlier in the week. Despite clearing cap space, they opted not to match the offers from St. Louis.

Interestingly, signing offer sheets has become increasingly rare in the NHL over the past decade. The last time a player signed an offer sheet was Jesperi Kotkaniemi in 2021 with the Carolina Hurricanes. Before Broberg, Holloway, and Kotkaniemi, the last offer sheet not matched was Dustin Penner in 2007.

As for the Oilers' general manager, Stan Bowman, he faces well deserved scrutiny due to his handling of the 2010 Blackhawks sexual assault allegations during his time in Chicago. I personally believe that certain matters are more significant than hockey itself if karma comes back to bite then so be it.

I’m all for offer sheets being a bigger and bigger part of the NHL. These are the best types of offer sheets: guys who may be worth the second-round pick or third-round pick. Maybe one team will pay them $1 million more. You get a little drama in the offseason, and some skill is spread out around the league. Players get paid more to play the game. We all win at the end of the day.
